Bird Dawgs Rally From Five Down but Fall 14-12 in Wild Road Trip Finale
BROCKTON, Mass. (August 16, 2026) – The Down East Bird Dawgs rallied from a five-run deficit and pulled within one in the eighth, but the Brockton Rox held on for a 14-12 victory at Campanelli Stadium Sunday afternoon, taking the series two games to one and sending Down East home after a 6-6 two-week road trip at 37-47.
Brockton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second on RBI singles from Austin White and Jack-Thomas Wold before Kalae Harrison cut it to 2-1 with an RBI single in the third.
The Rox erupted for four more in the bottom half to push the lead to 6-1 before Trey Law pulled Down East within three with a two-run single in the fourth. Wold and Evan Sleight answered with back-to-back solo homers to extend the lead to 8-3 before the Bird Dawgs stormed back in the fifth, as Colby Backus launched a three-run homer, Trotter Harlan added a sacrifice fly, and Law singled in the tying run to knot it at 8-8.
Down East took the lead in the sixth on a Jacob Corson solo homer and a Juan Garcia RBI single to go up 10-8, but Brockton answered with five runs of their own highlighted by a White three-run single to retake the lead at 13-10.
Backus scored on an error and Harlan added a bloop RBI single in the eighth to cut it to 13-12 before Nick Marola's pinch-hit RBI single closed out the 14-12 final.
Axel Andueza started for Down East, allowing eight runs on 11 hits over four innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Jack Hagan (3-3) took the loss, surrendering five runs — two earned — on five hits over one inning.
Joe Joe Rodriguez made his Rox debut, allowing six runs — five earned — on eight hits over four innings with five strikeouts and two walks. Zach Eldred (5-5) earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits in the sixth. Brenden Bell closed it out with a perfect ninth to collect his fourth save of the season.
The Bird Dawgs (37-47) return home to Historic Grainger Stadium for a six-game series against the Trois-Rivières Aigles beginning Tuesday, August 18, at 7 p.m. ET.
